The Trent Woods Police Department Traffic Safety Program was established in October of 2000 with grant funds from the North Carolina Governor's Highway Safety Program. Lieutenant Michael Register worked with Traffic Safety Specialist Cheryl Leonard to secure these funds and begin the traffic safety program.

The first year provided $49,764.99 to be used to purchase a fully equipped patrol car with state of the art equipment including a mobile computer terminal and mobile video camera. It also provided funding to train Trent Woods Police Officers on traffic safety issues and to educate our citizens about traffic safety.

The second and third year of the grant provided funds in the amount of $32,000.00 and $16,000.00. These funds were used to equip the remaining patrol vehicles with mobile computers, mobile video cameras, to purchase traffic safety educational items such as Fatal Vision Goggles and to educate our older drivers on traffic safety by sponsoring AARP 55 Alive driver training courses.

The total amount of this three year grant was $97,764.99. The Town of Trent Woods match was $39,541.00. Our department will continue to work with the Governor's Highway Safety Program to update and continue this traffic safety program.
